It was a beautiful sunny day for NEDAWALK at the Philadelphia Zoo on June 1st! Pi Dental Center sponsored this year’s event benefiting The National Eating Disorders Association. NEDA is the leading non-profit organization in the United States supporting individuals and families affected by eating disorders.
A fantastic turnout of 1,102 walkers participated in the walk. NEDA surpassed its goal raising $9,500 in the Philadelphia alone and a total of $98,557 to date.
NEDAWALK’s one-mile route circled the zoo. Afterwards, attendees were able to explore the zoo on their own, visiting the wildlife and enjoying the beautiful setting with their families and friends.
NEDA advocates on behalf of individuals and families affected by eating disorders. Reaching millions every year, they campaign for prevention, improved access to quality treatment, and increased research funding to better understand and treat eating disorders. NEDA works with partners and volunteers to develop programs and tools to help those who seek assistance.
Pi Dental Center partners with NEDA wherever possible to ensure that eating disorder patients have the compassionate care and concern of the prosthodontic community in fighting the disease and in supporting the healing process.
Pi helped sponsor the Philadelphia NEDAWALK as part of their ongoing efforts to support the National Eating Disorders Association. In April, Dr. Thomas and his wife, Joanne Balshi and Dr. James and Mrs. Diane Bowers represented the Pi Dental Center at the National Eating Disorder Awareness annual gala fundraising event in New York City, serving as a the Spirit of Courage sponsor at this event.
The prosthodontist plays an important part in the recovery of patients with eating disorders. Anorexia and bulimia can harm teeth and reduce bone in the mouth. This dental deterioration can cause further anxiety for the anorexic patient and make eating and chewing more difficult. Healthy teeth are a critical component in the overall perception of one’s self-image. With the intervention of eating disorder specialists and our professional dental team, further tooth damage can be prevented and worn teeth replaced. It is essential that the patient is physically able to consume a proper diet. The dentists at Pi Dental Center have helped many eating disorder patients.
Jenn Friedman, singer, author and eating disorder recovery advocate, who sang her original composition, “We Walk On,” at the event, described NEDAWALK beautifully, “It was incredible to be in a community of empowered people uniting for awareness and recovery!”
