Ergonomics is an important issue for dental professionals, and this blog is mainly for them. Today, we focus on an arm position commonly referred to as “chicken wing.” Learn more about ergonomics and the “chicken wing.”
Most of us learned about “chicken wing” (arm abduction) during our dental training. This arm position is damaging when used repetitively or for prolonged periods.
Arm abduction can stress joints and tendons, and cause shoulder impingement and rotator issues. In addition, repetitive use can contribute to elbow and wrist injuries and reduce blood flow with nerve compression and pain. These injuries can even result in early retirement by dental professionals.
There are several methods to prevent and reduce musculoskeletal problems caused by long-term malposition. They include learning correct positions, avoiding incorrect ones, taking breaks, and exercises that strengthen the muscles.
Good positioning and instruction to correct harmful postural habits can assure improved productivity, reduce pain and injuries, and increase work satisfaction. An ergonomic assessment and coaching are beneficial.
