A new study increases the body of knowledge confirming the strong connection between the mouth and the patient’s overall health. A recent study showed a link between root canal (endodontic treatment) and improved general health.
Pi Dental Center works closely with endodontists (experts in root canal treatment). Drs. Wolfinger and Slauch refer our patients to an endodontist, when an evaluation reveals they have an infected tooth root.
What is Root Canal?
A root canal may be necessary when the pulp of a tooth becomes infected. Deep decay, a crack, or injury, can cause infection. Symptoms can include throbbing pain, sensitivity to hot or cold, swelling gums or a darkened tooth. A root canal saves the tooth by removing the damaged pulp. This relieves pain and prevents the spread of infection. More information and video about root canal.
Current Endodontic Research
A recent study conducted at King’s College in London found that root canal can improve a person’s overall health. This treatment can potentially reduce inflammation, improve blood sugar, and improve cholesterol.
Periodontitis and General Health
The presence of periodontitis can increase the risk of diabetes, heart disease and other systemic conditions. This is because gum disease triggers inflammation and insulin resistance, aggravating diabetes. People with poorly controlled blood sugar are more prone to gum disease.
“An infected pulp can serve as a reservoir for bacteria to flourish,” says Dana Graves, a professor at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine Department of Periodontics. These bacteria can enter the bloodstream and spread throughout the body, states Sadia Niazi, King’s College.
In this study, researchers followed 65 patients for two years after they received endodontic treatment for dental infection.
Root Canal Follow-Up Treatment at Pi Dental Center
Following the procedure, the patient returns to Pi Dental Center for completion of treatment. In most cases, the patient receives an endodontic filling or an all-ceramic custom crown.
It has often been said that “the mouth is the gateway to overall health.” This is why it is so important to maintain optimal dental health. Root canal offers both short- and long-term benefits for the patient. If you are experiencing tooth sensitivity to hot or cold foods, tooth pain, or notice a cracked or damaged tooth, contact Pi Dental Center for evaluation and treatment.
