In 1952, a Swedish physician named Dr. Per-Ingvar Brånemark accidentally discovered a phenomenon called osseointegration that allowed metal to bond with bone. Dr. Brånemark, who is considered the “father of modern dental implantology,” conducted clinical research that led to the treatment of the first dental implant patient in 1965. Since that time, dental implant treatment has become the standard of care for dental patients. This blog outlines the key reasons to consider dental implants. Read about the Top Ten Reasons to Choose Dental Implants.
Osseointegration is the biological process by which living bone fuses with the titanium dental implant to form an artificial tooth root.
Dental implants are synthetic roots that replace natural teeth. Titanium implants actually bond to natural bone and become the sub-structure for non-removable teeth.
Dental implants are the best choice for replacement of missing teeth. Here are ten reasons to consider dental implant for replacement of missing teeth.
#1 Success:
Dental implant treatment has been shown to be a successful treatment protocol. Dental implants have a very high survival rate. Studies indicate a survival rate ranging from 92.6% to 99.9% for osseointegrated implants. Three research studies back this statement up. (See in Notes – 1, 2, 3 below)
#2 A Healthy Mouth:
The surrounding teeth are not compromised when an implant is placed. Dental implants allows the dental specialist to replace a tooth without affecting the patient’s surrounding teeth. You don’t need to get a bridge anymore to replace a single tooth. You can simply treat the specific area where the tooth is missing.
#3 Bone Health:
When a dental implant is in place, the bone reacts by fusing around the surface of the implant. The concept is called the internal bone remodeling stimulus. The implant actually stimulates the bone. Dental implants tend to maintain bone levels.
#4 Convenience:
Dental implants are a permanent non-removable solution. A dental implant supported prosthesis stays in your mouth at night, so you don’t need to store it in a jar.
#5 Peace of Mind:
Removable dentures can loosen and fall out when least expected at the most inopportune time. Dental implant supported prostheses won’t fall out or loosen.
#6 Comfort:
Removable partial appliances tend to move and rub on the surrounding teeth. This movement can wear out the enamel and ultimately loosen the teeth in their sockets. Removable appliances can weaken surrounding bone and ligaments, ultimately causing tooth mobility, pain and even tooth loss. Dental implants do not damage surrounding teeth.
#7 Scientifically Proven:
Dental implant technology is a proven protocol and because of digital technology, the overall prosthesis and the individual teeth are stronger, plus it takes less time to fabricate.
#8 Improved Facial Features:
Removable dentures can lead to bone loss over time which can cause a sunken appearance of face. Dental implant treatment supports the facial structure. It’s almost like having an internal face lift.
#9 Self-Esteem:
When people lose their teeth, they may become depressed and feel less confident. This can eventually lead to withdrawal and social isolation due to anxiety and embarrassment. They may feel self-conscious and avoid smiling. This can affect their social lives. Many people avoid social situations. Dental implant supported teeth dramatically improve appearance and self-confidence. Dental implant patients report a dramatic improvement in self-esteem.
#10 Improved Health:
Dental implants make eating more enjoyable. Better chewing ability means better nutrition.
In Conclusion
“Dental implants have improved the quality of life for numerous patients over the past 50+ years. Pi Dental Center’s trademarked Teeth In A Day® protocol has provided a quick and efficient process for tooth replacement,” states Dr. Glenn Wolfinger, board certified prosthodontist at Pi Dental Center.
Our patients’ testimonials confirm that they are glad they made the choice to have dental implant treatment at Pi Dental Center.

- In 2015 the International Journal of Oral Maxillofacial Implants published an article written by Dr. Thomas Balshi, Dr. Glenn Wolfinger, Dr. BE Stein and Stephen Balshi, MBE. This studied included 470 patients with 2,394 dental implants. It found that after 10 to 27 years of follow-up, the survival rate for dental implants was 92.6%. https://dentalimplants-usa.com/scientific-journal-articles/retrospect-analysis-survival-implants-mand/
- Dental implant treatment has been successful in diabetic patients. In 1999, Dr. Thomas Balshi and Dr. Glenn Wolfinger completed a retrospective study, which was published in the dental journal, Implant Dentistry. This study reported on the results of placing dental implants in 34 patients with diabetes who were treated with 227 Brånemark implants. At the time of second-stage surgery, 214 of the implants had osseointegrated, a survival rate of 94.3 percent. Only one failure was identified among the 177 implants followed through final restoration, a clinical survival rate of 99.9 percent. https://dentalimplants-usa.com/health-issues-and-dentistry/diabetic-patients-implants/
- In 2014, Drs. Balshi, Wolfinger, Slauch and Stephen Balshi, MBE published “A Retrospective Analysis of 800 Brånemark System Implants Following the All-on-Four Protocol” in the Journal of Prosthodontics. It should be noted, the overall implant survival rate was 97.3% for implants and the prosthesis survival rate was 99%. The prosthesis survival rate was 99.0%. https://dentalimplants-usa.com/scientific-journal-articles/retrospectiveanalysis800/

It is indeed true that dental implants are the best choice for replacement of missing teeth. Dentures might be an option with lesser cost, but dental implants last longer and keep the jaw bone from degrading.
