An Immediate Denture is a temporary prosthesis that is fabricated prior to the removal of teeth, so that the patient can receive new teeth the same day as the teeth are extracted.
This temporary removable prosthesis is worn while the soft tissue and bone heals following removal of the teeth.
Under what circumstances would we advise an Immediate Denture?
If a patient wants to have tooth replacement immediately following removal of teeth, then an Immediate Denture would be indicated.
What are the advantages of an Immediate Denture?
The advantage of an immediate denture is that a patient will have new teeth immediately following removal of teeth, instead of waiting months for the soft bone and tissue to heal. This allows the patient to have immediate function. The patient can speak and eat during this healing period.
Immediate Dentures can give the patient a natural-looking smile. During the healing period, the patient can determine exactly what they like about the teeth in terms of tooth shade and shape. This can help them determine how they would like the Final Denture to look.
An Immediate Denture acts like a Band-Aid. This denture provides compression to the area, protects the extraction sites, and help to control bleeding.
What should I expect?
As the bone and soft tissues heal during the months following removal of the teeth, the denture may become loose. Over time, the bone and soft tissues may shrink and reshape. The denture may not fit perfectly and may need to be relined during this healing period.
As with all dental prostheses, the patient will need to adjust to the shape and feel of their denture.
Regularly scheduled follow-up appointments with the Prosthodontist are needed to address any discomfort or looseness of the Immediate Denture.
How many appointments are needed to get and Immediate Denture?
Two visits are needed for this procedure. During the first visit, impressions and jaw records are taken. The second visit will include removal of the teeth and delivery of the Immediate Denture.
What advice do you have for someone who is getting an Immediate Denture?
An Immediate Denture is a temporary solution for tooth replacement. After the bone and soft tissue heals, the fabrication of a Final Denture created by CM Prosthetics dental lab will be required to create a more ideal fit and esthetic result.
You may consider transitioning to a fixed dental implant-supported solution.
If a patient decides that they would like to transition to a non-removable solution, dental implants can be placed a few months after the teeth are extracted. This denture can be converted to a fixed temporary prosthesis and worn during the healing phase while the implants bond with the bone.
