Master Ceramist, Nancy Gausz, was highlighted in the August issue of AGD Impact Magazine. The article, written by Michal Christine Escobar, is titled, “Where Artistry Meets Exceptional Skill: Profiling Master Ceramists.”
About Nancy Gausz
Nancy Gausz is a Master Ceramist at Pi Dental Center with over 45 years of experience. In 1978, at 18 years-old, Nancy trained to be a master ceramist with Gerald Brosco at OCA Dental Laboratory. It should be noted, Brosco was a military trained master ceramist and he hired Nancy right out of high school because didn’t want his technicians to have any experience. He wanted to train them his way. This was in the days of porcelain-fused to gold restorations. Nancy is best at chair-side custom shading, which she learned from Brosco.
In 1984, Nancy was certified as a ceramist by completing all duties of a dental technician that ranged from pouring impressions, creating a working model, to completing a porcelain crown and a full gold crown.
Pi Dental Center’s Porcelain Lab
After leaving OCA, Nancy moved on to Spectrum Dental and then Fort Washington Dental Lab. Today, Nancy is the Master Ceramist at Pi Dental Center’s in-house porcelain laboratory. At Pi Dental Center, which specialized in implant and restorative prosthodontics, Nancy has the opportunity to work directly with patients doing chairside custom shading.
Nancy had many years of training, building cases, learning tooth morphology and function. She learned the esthetics of natural shade blending between dentin and the translucent incisal edge.
“Teamwork is vital to a successful outcome for the patient. The doctor and ceramist work together to provide a functioning restoration that is esthetically pleasing to the patient. The restoration must suit the patient’s individual facial characteristics. Deciding the shade of the restoration must not only match the natural dentition, but also include assessing eye color, skin color, and hair color.” – Nancy Gausz, CDT.
